welcome to topanga

If Governor Schwarzenegger has his way
Topanga State Park will close July 1, 2008.

As part of the Governor's prosposal to close the $14.5 billion deficit expected for 2008-2009, California State Parks Director Ruth Coleman recommended closing 48 State Parks and Beaches, including Topanga State Park and Will Rogers State Historic Park. The savings projected from all 48 closures - just $14 million. Unbelievable! The proposal goes directly to the heart of our work at Topanga, where gates will be locked to keep people out and trespassers might be cited.

Members of Topanga Canyon Docents have started an organization called Campaign To Save Topanga State Park. And many Docents (and our Board) are supporting the statewide effort of the California State Parks Foundation to keep all our state parks open to the public. Both organizations have websites with more Information about the governor's proposal and actions your might want to take. Please review them both:

our mission - introduce people to Topanga State Park

Photo of Topanga hillside We're here to introduce Topanga State Park, the largest wildland park in the world located in a major city and the largest park in the Santa Monica Mountains.  We're volunteer nature walk leaders. The mild wet winters and hot dry summers of our Mediterranean climate make Los Angeles a beautiful place to live, but they put it in the most endangered ecotype on the planet.

join our easy family & school walks

Come see the our uniquely adapted Chapparal plants, Live Oak Woodlands and Coastal Sage Scrub.  See migrating birds on their way to Alaska and Mexico.  Learn about the native Chumash and Tongva people.  Learn about fire ecology - thankfully Topanga didn't burn this past summer, but October's Corral Fire in Malibu was just 10 miles away.  View the ocean, mountains and valley from our trails.  Come on out and get some fresh air!  Click Public Walks on the menu to find out more.

fun for kids and grown-ups!

Photo of Mallards on Trippet Ranch pond The Topanga Canyon Docents was started in 1974 by a group of friends and activists who wanted to share their love of nature and the Santa Monica Mountains.  We  lead public nature walks and give programs for school children.  We're committed environmentalists who've created a popular and fun educational program.  We don't have paid staff - we're all volunteers, and we'd love to have you join us.
